Black History Month is observed every February originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. Below are a few pictures honoring Black History Month from our bulletin boards throughout Snyder Park.
In February, we are focusing on Habit 6: Synergize. Synergize is when two or more people work together to create a better solution that neither would have thought of alone. It's not your way or my way, but a better way! Synergy is taking good ideas and making them better by working together. The end of third quarter is coming fast! Soon, we will be making plans for the end of the school year. Parents, we are asking that you partner with us to finish this year strong. We need all hands on deck to ensure success.
We have added a writing focus to our second semester goals. Please encourage your student(s) to write at home. Click here for a video on how to encourage your student(s) to write. Click here to help your student write a sentence and click here to help your student write a paragraph.
Our school wide attendance goal at Snyder Park is for 93% of our students to attend school regularly. In October, we had 92.46% attend; November 92%, December 90.33%, and January 85.5%. Our percentages are falling. We are counting on you to make sure that your student is coming to school each day and on time. Every day counts!
Mr. Sledge
Our second semester plan at Snyder Park will continue to focus on the same first semester goals with the addition of a writing focus. We have implemented a writing portion during our Stop, Drop, Read, and Write activity for each grade level on Fridays.
At Snyder Park we will increase the number of students (K-6) reaching their stretch growth from 22% to at least 33% and our student-led experiences will also increase from 0 to 2 by the end of the school year.
Our school wide attendance goal is for 93% of our students to attend school regularly. In October, we had 92.46% attend; November 92%, December 90.33%, and January 85.5%. Each week, the grade level with the highest average attendance percentage receives a trophy that they get to keep for the entire week. We are hoping to reach our goal of 93% in February!
Please click this link to view our second semester plan goals. These goals are a work in progress that we will continue working towards for the remainder of the school year. Also included are some action steps to help us get there!

Our teachers and staff have reviewed our building wide expectations and procedures with students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, restrooms, playgrounds, and technology use. Our expectations are based on being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. For example, students must be respectful and raise their hand to speak in the classroom. They must stay in their seat and walk in the cafeteria. They must take care of their district issued device and only use approved sites at approved times. You can ask your student questions about these expectations to start a conversation!
The Health Center at Springfield High is up and running! It is located on the lower level of the High School with the main entrance behind the football stands. The Health Center will provide sick office visits, routine health screenings, updated vaccines, and counseling services. Any Springfield City School student with guardian consent can be seen and will be given priority. This facility is also a service for family members and SCSD staff. Appointments can be made by calling 937-717-2578. If a student is ill while at school they will need their school nurse to help decide if a sick appointment is needed and if so the nurse will help the family make arrangements. All major insurances accepted. Discounted services are available for those who qualify. Please click here for more information.
Explore the challenges that elementary aged children, parents, and educators face regarding screen time. This informational evening will highlight research on healthy screen time limits and offer practical solutions.
In the morning the bus turnaround is for district buses to drop off students, however it has been allowed for parents to drop off students when it is clear. If you notice buses are parked, do not enter the turnaround. At times when there are no buses, you must drop off your student and leave. No waiting. The use of the turnaround for student drop off is subject to change based on bus complaints. If so, the turnaround will be blocked off until all buses arrive.
No parking in the turnaround during dismissal.
To pick your students up early in the office, please have a picture I.D. available. Students will not be released after 2:45p.m.
Please notify us of any dismissal changes before 2:30p.m. by calling the office at 937-505-4430.
Siblings will be picked up on big playground side.
Individual students will be picked up by the cafeteria doors.
School dismisses at 3:02p.m. Please be here no later than 3:02p.m.
If your students walk, please make sure they walk home directly after school. If your student is crossing Bechtle Ave., they must cross at Broadway Street (crossing light) for safety reasons.
In February, we are focusing on Habit 6: Synergize, is when two or more people work together to create a better solution that either would have thought of alone. It's not your way or my way, but a better way. Talk about the equation 1+1=3 (or more). Synergy is taking good ideas and making them better by working together. Discussions can focus on other examples of synergy in nature, history, literature, and personal experiences. For example, synergy happens in nature when a flock of geese heads south for the winter. They fly in a V formation because due to the updraft, the entire flock can fly farther than if each bird flew alone.
Below are some activities that you can do at home with your student:
1. With your child(ren), choose a problem you may have (like completing tasks). Use the Synergy Action Plan to summarize your child's solution and your solution: (1) Define the problem. (2) Share your views. (3) Think of solutions. (4) Choose the best solution together. See if you can reach a better solution (the High Way) than either of you would have come up with alone.
2. Institute a "15-minute program" where everyone drops what they are doing and pitches in to work as a team to clean the kitchen, pull weeds in the garden, wash the dishes, sweep the front porch, etc. Cutting out a small block of time where everyone helps makes the work go quicker.
3. If your child has siblings, ask each to identify what they think their brother or sister is really good at, then share the lists with each other and discuss how they could Synergize on homework, chores, playing games, sports, etc. If your child does not have siblings, you can do the same exercise using his or her best friends- or you.
4.Read Chapter 6 of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book with your child and then complete the Parent's Corner.

Springfield City School District and Wittenberg University celebrate National Girls &
Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) to bring new athletic opportunities to young women.
On February 3rd, 15 of our 5th and 6th grade girls participated with other girls from SCSD's 10 elementary schools in a field trip to Wittenberg University. They tried their hands at various sports, including soccer, lacrosse, softball, basketball, track & field, football, golf, wrestling, and volleyball, under the mentorship of Wittenberg and SCSD student-athletes and coaches.
NGWSD has evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of girls and women in sports, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

Miss Howell, First Grade Teacher is our Staff in the Spotlight!
Here are a few attributes about how Miss Howell is seeing success in her classroom. Her students have been tracking their own data for attendance, ELA and math.
They meet biweekly for data chats during progress monitoring and get to add to the classroom growth chart every time they have shown growth.
They have accountability partners to double check their progress.
Her class has data chats on Fridays. Students get to update their class scoreboard weekly.
The leadership roles they have taken on have improved students' maturity, responsibility, and the culture in the classroom.
They are encouraging to each other, realize that school is important, and they are motivated to be the Leader of the month!
