In March, we are focusing on Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw is about balance and renewal. The Ohio State Tests begin on April 7th for our third through sixth grade students; as we approach these upcoming tests, maintaining a healthy lifestyle balance is especially important. Encourage your student to eat a balanced diet, get regular physical exercise, adequate sleep, and stay hydrated. It is our plan during testing weeks to have synergy assemblies that will encourage a positive outlook on testing, motivate our students to do their best, promote school unity, and provide support for the upcoming tests.
Regular attendance is crucial for your child's academic success. Being present in school allows students to fully engage with their lessons, participate in discussions, and build upon their knowledge. During testing periods, arriving on time is particularly important to minimize distractions and ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their assessments in a calm environment. Our school-wide attendance goal is 93%, in February our percentage was only 85.5%. Please make sure your student is at school each day and on time.
~Mr. Sledge
To help your student perform their best during testing, here are some effective strategies to keep in mind:
Stay Organized: Encourage your child to keep their materials organized and to review their notes regularly.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing or short meditation can help reduce anxiety before and during tests.
Read Instructions Carefully: Remind your child to take the time to read all instructions thoroughly before starting the test.
Manage Time Wisely: Encourage them to keep track of time and to pace themselves through the test.
Review Answers: If time permits, they should review their answers before submitting the test.
Practice Positivity: Keep a positive attitude towards testing and remind your child that they can do well and encourage self belief.
Celebrate: Take a moment to celebrate each accomplishment. Plan for a fun outing or a special treat.
A healthy lifestyle is also important for students to achieve success. Below are some tips for living a healthy lifestyle:
Balanced Diet: Encourage your child to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. A healthy breakfast on test days will make a significant difference.
Regular exercise: Physical activity helps to reduce stress and improve concentration. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
Adequate Sleep: Ensure your child is getting enough restful sleep, especially the night before a test. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep for optimal performance.
Stay hydrated: Remind them to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
Our second semester plan at Snyder Park will continue to focus on the same first semester goals with the addition of a writing focus. We have implemented a writing portion during our Stop, Drop, Read, and Write activity for each grade level on Fridays.
At Snyder Park we will increase the number of students (K-6) reaching their stretch growth from 22% to at least 33% and our student-led experiences will also increase from 0 to 2 by the end of the school year.
Our school wide attendance goal is for 93% of our students to attend school regularly. In September, we had 88.75% attend, October 92.46%, November 92%, December 90.33%, January 85.5%, and February 85.5%. Each week, the grade level with the highest average attendance percentage receives a trophy that they get to keep for the entire week. We are hoping to reach our goal of 93% in March!
We have added a writing focus to our second semester goals. Please encourage your student(s) to write at home. Click here for a video on how to encourage your student(s) to write. Click here to help your student write a sentence and click here to help your student write a paragraph.
Please click this link to view our second semester plan goals. These goals are a work in progress that we will continue working towards for the remainder of the school year. Also included are some action steps to help us get there!

As an attendance incentive, we have 6 scooters for students to ride through our hallways! There will be multiple drawings for students who had perfect attendance for the week to have the opportunity to ride the scooters.
Our students are working hard on practicing their writing skills. They are focusing on sentence structure and paragraph writing. Below are a few pictures of student work displayed in our hallways. Let's take a moment to celebrate the growth our students are showing!
Our teachers and staff have reviewed our building wide expectations and procedures with students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, restrooms, playgrounds, and technology use. Our expectations are based on being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. For example, students must be respectful and raise their hand to speak in the classroom. They must stay in their seat and walk in the cafeteria. They must take care of their district issued device and only use approved sites at approved times. You can ask your student questions about these expectations to start a conversation!

In the morning the bus turnaround is for district buses to drop off students, however it has been allowed for parents to drop off students when it is clear. If you notice buses are parked, do not enter the turnaround. At times when there are no buses, you must drop off your student and leave. No waiting. The use of the turnaround for student drop off is subject to change based on bus complaints. If so, the turnaround will be blocked off until all buses arrive.
No parking in the turnaround during dismissal.
To pick your students up early in the office, please have a picture I.D. available. Students will not be released after 2:45p.m.

In March, we are focusing on Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. There is a story of a man who was sawing down a tree and not making a lot of progress. When a passerby asked him why he didn't stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he remarked that he was too busy sawing. Habit 7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance- body, brain, heart, and soul. Just like the four tires on a car, if one area is being ignored or overused, the rest will feel the results. For young children, the car analogy is one they understand; a car could not go on fewer than all four tires. Explain the four parts of each person (body, brain, heart, and soul) and how important it is to take care of each part to make them all work better.
Below are some activities that you can do at home with your student:
1. Develop a Sharpen the Saw activity center in your home. Include arts-and-crafts supplies, learning games, puzzles, classical music, books, etc.
2. Discuss various ways to Sharpen the Saw in all areas. Ideas might include: body (playing outside, riding your bike), brain (balancing reading with TV watching or making smarter choices about what you watch), heart (making a list of what makes you happy and doing something on the list every day, spending time with special friends and family), and soul (attending religious services, starting a journal).
3. Reading inspirational books.
4.Read Chapter 7 of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book with your child and then complete the Parent's Corner.

Ms. Toni Cockerham is our Staff in the Spotlight!
I am Toni Cockerham and this is my 12th year as the Occupational Therapy Assistant here at Snyder Park. I also have students at Lagonda Elementary and Nightingale Montessori, but I consider Snyder Park my home!! I graduated from The Ohio State University…a long time ago, with a degree in Elementary Education. I taught 3rd grade in Colorado for several years before my children were born. I stayed home as a mom for several years and then worked as a substitute teacher until they were grown. That’s when I started my second career as an OTA.
It was one of the best decisions of my life. I love what I get to do every day and am very grateful to be part of the Snyder Park family
