Summer Tips for Parents

Children have more free time in the summer, which allows parents to create stronger connections and keep their children engaged. Below are some tips that can be used over the summer months to keep your family active and having fun. (from Kumon.com) Click here for lots of summer fun suggestions and here for fun summer recipes you can create together.

  • Schedule fun: Together with your children, create a summer list of activities that your family would like to do together. Put it on a calendar... this will give them something to look forward to.

  • Resist the urge to over schedule: Having a routine is important, but it's also important to allow time for unstructured downtime.

  • Set aside time each day to do something fun with your child(ren): The smallest activities can have the largest impact.

  • Encourage your child(ren) to try something new this summer: New activities encourage brain development and build your child's focus and creativity.

  • Limit technology: Get outside and play. Replace the screen with reading and trips to the library. Books open the imagination and creativity in every child.

  • Create structure and set boundaries: In the summer months, children are freed from the structure of school but they need the security of knowing that some things will remain the same.

***Announcement***

You will be informed of your child's homeroom teacher during our Open House on Thursday, August 14th, 4-5:30p.m.

Leader in Me

This summer, help your student sharpen their saw by practicing key elements of each Leader in Me habit at home! Talk with your student about Leader in Me and what they learned during the 2024/25 school year. Use The 7 Habits and The Five Core Paradigms below to spark your conversation.

Habit 1: Be Proactive (I'm Responsible for Me): Take responsibility for your choices and behaviors.

Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind (Have a Plan): Think about how you would like something to turn out before you get started.

Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play): Decide what is most important and take care of that first.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win): Believe that everyone can win.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen Before You Talk): It is better to listen first and talk second.

Habit 6: Synergize (Together Is Better): When two or more people work together to create a better solution that either would have thought of alone.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best): Have balance in your life.

There are five core paradigms that are the foundation for Leader in Me:

  1. Everyone can be a leader- Recognize that you are a leader. Reflect on your strengths and the strengths of your family members.

  2. Everyone has genius- Ask your child what their unique genius is.

  3. Change starts with me- Discuss how each member of the family has shown personal responsibility for their actions and choices.

  4. Empower students to lead their own learning- Empower your student at home to be "in charge" of their learning experience by asking questions rather than just always giving them the answer.

  5. Educators and families partner to develop the whole person- Reflect on how you take care of your mind, body, heart, and spirit and share that with other members of your family.
